The village of Danby lies in the peaceful Esk Valley, and offers visitors a select range of amenities including two public houses, both serving excellent food, and a bakery. There is a visitor's centre at nearby Danby Lodge which houses educational exhibitions, craft displays and a tea room. The centre is set in 13 acres and offers visitors wonderful nature trails and other walks.
The last of the working water mills on the River Esk can be found at the mouth of the river and has been restored to full working order. Danby Castle is now partly a ruin but has a fascinating history and was the home to Catherine Parr, Henry VIII's last wife, when she was married to John Neville, Lord Latimer of Danby.
This area makes a superb base to see this tremendous area.
