The peaceful Dales village of Gilling West is a lovely, attractive little town and was winner of the 'Yorkshire in Bloom' award. Set in lovely rolling countryside just a few miles to the north of the popular market town of Richmond, Gilling West is well supplied by local amenities and offers not only a lovely old church, but also two pubs, both of which serve food, as well as a post office.
Richmond itself contains a magnificent Georgian Theatre and an imposing, ruined medieval castle that overlooks the River Swale. The area is full of footpaths and bridleways, criss-crossing the picturesque landscape in every direction and excellent fishing facilities are available nearby. This wonderful town makes an idea base for exploring all of Swaledale and Teesdale, regardless of the time of year.
